Coke Reduction/Carbon
Briquettes
Miller and Company's
Carbon briquettes are produced from a unique combination of carbonaceous
materials, rich in graphite. It is not a coke breeze product. These briquettes
can provide the following benefits, when used as a supplement to foundry
coke in a cupola furnace.
A. Coke Reduction-Source
of Carbon
Most common use of these briquettes is to replace/supplement the coke
that provides Carbon to iron, thus reducing the amount of coke charged,
resulting in cost savings. Costly supplemental additions of graphite after
tapping of cupola can also be reduced.
B. Reduce
Pig Iron
Because of graphite content of Carbon Briquettes, some foundries have
been able to reduce the amount of Pig Iron in the charge. Cost savings
are possible, depending on the relative cost of the Pig Iron vs. steel.
C. Hotter
Iron
Higher iron temperature is possible by utilizing the Carbon from these
briquettes to raise the tap Carbon and utilizing the coke to raise the
temperature. Another alternative would be to charge more coke but at a
significantly higher cost than briquettes.
D. Flexibility/Better
Carbon Control
When used in combination with Silicon Carbide briquettes, this product
can be used to increase/decrease tap Carbon without changing the amount
of Silicon Carbide briquettes and coke.
E. Higher
Melt Rate
In some cases, a higher melt rate is possible if these briquettes are
used and the amount of coke is not reduced, because air blow rate will
have to be increased to compensate for higher temperature.
Most foundries use
this product to reduce the amount of coke charged and thus reduce their
overall charge cost. Briquettes are available in 23 pound slabs on pallets
for manual additions or as bulk briquettes in oval or cylindrical form
for bulk handling systems. They are very strong and unlike coke will not
disintegrate during handling.

Application |
These
briquettes can be used to partially replace (10-15%) coke in
a Cupola. Typical replacement ratio is approximately 110-120
pounds of briquettes for 100 pounds of coke, in some cases pound
for pound replacement has been achieved. Actual replacement
ratio will vary, depending upon quality of coke, cupola operation
as well as tap temperature and tap Carbon. |
Other |
Care should be taken
in determining the amount of coke replaced as certain minimum
amount of coke is essential for cupola operation. |
